Hummer H1 Production to be Halted
GM has announced that it will no longer make the Hummer H1 as it no longer fits in its long term strategy of targeting mainstream drivers. In 2005 only 374 Hummer H1 s were sold compared to 447 in 2004. The 2004 model year version of the H1 and the 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha are the only models planned to be cut. The Hummer H2 and new Hummer H3 will continue being produced.
AM General whose plant in Mishawaka Ind. was quoted as saying no job cuts are expected due to this change. All workers that have been producing the civilian H1 will simply move to the military production lines.
The H1 base price of $106 000 for the 2004 model and $130 000 to $140 000 price for the 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha along with the up tick in gas to over $3 a gallon may have played a roll. However as exotic sports cars with similarly horrid gas mileage keep ringing up sales perhaps the lure and awe of the H1 had lost some of its power.
I personally cant think that they employed all that many people on the lines if only 374 were made in 2005. If you break that production number out its little over a Hummer H1 a day. I appreciate the H1 but personally have never been a fan. Having never driven the Hummer H1 I am not sure how it rides but the Hummer H2 sits way up high and feels odd to me. I do have a sporty car and am not a big fan of trucks so this difference is a lot for me to get over from the start. However I just dont see a person s need of an H1 other then the status symbol that you can afford the price and the gas. If you ever get a look inside it s not very usable and from a best guess has less usable interior room then the H2 or other larger SUV s.
Being that this is America we are all entitled to our silly cars of choice no matter how great or horrible they are. To some the Hummer H1 will be missed and others that prefer the more green and hybrid side of things are more then likely charging up their cars for a party this weekend.
