2006 Porsche Cayman S Preview
Just over a month ago in Detroit this new entry by Porsche was shown to the press and public. The new 2006 Porsche Cayman S will sit price wise between the Porsche Boxster and Porsche 911 models.
Performance: This mid-engine model has alot in common with the Boxster as it shares much of its underpinnings. Unlike the somewhat weaker Boxster the Cayman will have a bit more firepower under the hood. The Cayman S will sport a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine that will crank out 295-horsepower. This firepower along with some of the technology used on the Porsche 911 help the Cayman achieve such a high level of performance one expects from something with the Porsche name upon it. This high level can be reached in 0-60 time of just 5.1 seconds. Heading to the track? If so look for the Porsche Cayman S to top out at 171 mph.
Pricing: This new experience has been on sale in the states since January 14, 2006 with a starting price of $58,900. With the Boxster starting at $45000, the Boxster S at $54700, and the 911 Carrera Coupe at $71300 the Cayman has a perfect middle ground starting price.
Comments: I must say that getting up close, taking a good look inside and out I was very happy with the Cayman S. There is more storage then you would expect with room up front, the rear and some within reaching distance of a driver or passenger. I do however find an issue with the leg room for us "taller" drivers. Standing at 6\4 I was squished, as was the 5\10 female representative for Porsche. It seems that for all of the similarites with the Boxster that legroom is not one of them. As much as I love this car inside and out I am sad to say there is no way that I could buy this. Porsche when you make this for tall people please let me know and I will think about trading in my Corvette, till then I am quite happy with my car.
